1 The 12 double lessons of basic theory apply when you get your first licence. If you already hold a driving licence, you only need 6 double lessons. A double lesson lasts 90 minutes, a driving lesson 45 minutes.

2 How much training you need depends heavily on which class you already hold and for how long – with class C it is considerably less. For all bus classes you need class B, a medical examination, proof of your eyesight, a psychological aptitude test and a certificate of good conduct. The licence is valid for 5 years.

Details according to the German Driving Licence Regulation (FeV) and the German Driving Instruction Regulation (FahrschAusbO), as of July 2026. All figures are statutory minimum requirements – how many extra practice lessons you need depends on your personal ability.

Your road to the bus licence

Theory training

How much theory you need depends heavily on which classes you already hold. If you already have a truck licence, you save a considerable part of the lessons.

  • Class D1: 6 double lessons of basic theory and 10 double lessons of class-specific theory
  • Class D: 6 double lessons of basic theory and 18 double lessons of class-specific theory, class DE: no separate theory lessons

Practical training

The actual number of driving lessons depends a lot on the classes you already hold – with class C it is considerably lower than when starting from class B. The special training drives are required by law.

  • Class D1: 4 to 19 hours on rural roads, 2 to 12 hours on the motorway, 2 to 7 hours of night driving
  • Class D: 8 to 22 hours on rural roads, 4 to 14 hours on the motorway, 3 to 8 hours of night driving
  • Classes D1E and DE: 3 hours on rural roads, 1 hour on the motorway and 1 hour of night driving each

  • Medical and eye specialist examination plus an aptitude test
  • Proof of your first aid course

Frequently asked questions

From what age can I take the bus licence?

Class D is usually available from the age of 24, and the smaller class D1 from 21. With a basic professional driver qualification you can start earlier, depending on the scope of the qualification and where you will be driving.

Do I need a professional driver qualification?

For commercial passenger transport, yes. We offer both the basic qualification and the regular further training under the German professional driver qualification act directly here with us.

Can the training be funded?

Yes. Funding through an education voucher (Bildungsgutschein) from the employment agency or the job centre is possible if you want to launch a career as a bus driver. We are happy to talk you through the process.
